maldives guide

The weather in the Maldives is generally nice and warm all year round, it ranges from anywhere between 24 and 33 °C throughout the year. There tends to be a lot of humidity in the Maldives but being an island the sea breeze often helps keep it to a minimum.

There are two main seasons to the Maldivian weather, the dry season and the rainy season. The average rainfall in the North is roughly 2,540 millimetres whereas it’s roughly 3,810 in the South. It has been said that the weather in the Maldives is based on a number of factors such as the landmass of South Asia, the barrier of the Himalayas and monsoons which affect the seas in and around the Maldives.

The Maldives mainly sees the worst weather between the months of May and November, you can expect to see strong winds and storms on a daily basis. You often find that the exact weather patterns will vary as they don’t always follow the traditional patterns so if you do plan on visiting the Maldives, be sure to do a little research beforehand. You will experience the shift between southwest to the northeast monsoon around the beginning of December and lasting until the end of March, beginning of April.

1991 was a disastrous year for the Maldives, in May a monsoon created brutal winds that caused tidal waves to rip through buildings and piers, flood land with sea water, ruin many crops and much more. It was said to have caused around $30 million worth of damage to the Maldives.
